about

Music in the American Wild began as a celebration of the 2016 U. S. National Park Service Centennial.

During the Summer of 2016 the American Wild Ensemble toured seven national parks to premiere the works recorded here. Eleven composers and eight performers came together to fill several of our country’s grandest natural venues with a new opus of inherently American music. These commissioned works, supported in part by a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts, were inspired by the history, variety, and majesty of our national parks and other American landscapes. From caves and mountaintops to forests and lakeshores, the Music in the American Wild initiative honored a major milestone in American conservation by letting new music ring out from sea to shining sea.

The first disc of this set has also been made into a full-length video album of beautiful footage from our original tour. Available online, the album allows listeners to experience the music along with stunning images and visual storytelling from places the American Wild Ensemble traveled. These films, created by Jorge Arzac, share footage from Great Smoky Mountains, Mammoth Cave, Mount Rainier, North Cascades Olympic, and Shenandoah National Parks, and San Juan Island National Historical Park, as well as several other stops along the tour. We hope that the combination of music and video allows you to share in our sense of wonder at the treasure of our national park system and experience the inspiration we find in the American wild.

The American Wild Ensemble continues to celebrate the people, places, and ideas that have helped shape American history and culture. We focus on context-driven music that encourages our audiences to explore their environments through a different lens, engage with contemporary music in a new way, and experience the special connection between performers, listeners, and the spaces that surround them.
